Twenty Squares/ The Royal Game of Ur
Simon de Spaldyng will lead a one hour workshop on one of the world's oldest games. This game, played with either of two board shapes, is found in Sumerian, Egyptian, and Cypriot forms from 2500 to 1500 BCE, and was played throughout the Classical Mediterranean. Two players cast binary dice and race along the board in a game that combines chance and strategy, much like Pachisi, Backgammon, and "Sorry!". Simon provides equipment for the workshop, with instructional handouts and paper boards for the participants to take home.
